Election Overdose

I have this feeling of hopelessness, exhaustion, disappointment. Mass shootings, bombs, vitriolic rhetoric, more mass shootings – so very much anger and hate. I feel like the man who some people elected president is a washing machine – agitating, performing a kind of a cleaning function in alterating facts, jumbling, tangling. He is not alone in the lies being told in this campaign – probably in all campaigns. I am more likely more sensitive to it this year. I’m suffering from election overdose. Can we just get over it? Thank you.

I have considered posts answering questions that others create. I have considered posts just rambling, which this one will probably be. I have considered no posts, a break from the world. I would be most happy with a break from the world, yet I am drawn to the news like a miller to a light. If things do not change after this election, if people in government and out do not show more common sense, more logic, more reason, less emotion and reacting, I might have to take a break for my own mental health. Start wearing blinders and earplugs.

All is not bleak, truly. I had a good visit with my Kat last weekend. I talk with my Gep via email or text just often enough to satisfy me. I get angsty if we go too long without contact. Once a mother, always a mother.

I have been ignoring my yardwork, because it’s the season for things to fall from trees. I like the leaves of the deciduous trees – I like the crunch beneath my feet when I walk through them. I am less fond of the needles of the Ponderosa Pine – those long needles that pile up everywhere. And of the cones that fall from those pines. They are pretty, yes. I use some for Christmas decorations. But they are also dangerous, when I don’t see the one my foot is about to come down on which can result in a twisted ankle or fall. Falls are bad.

Instead, I have been spending my time in the kitchen, rearranging, changing things, dehydrating foods to allow more space in my refrigerator freezer. I have a side-by-side, which seemed a good option when we bought it. But it’s hard to see what’s in that freezer without pulling everything out, without getting down into a crouching position. I have opted to quit using the big freezer in the garage because after all there is only one of me, and I have seen a noticeable drop in my electric bill as a result. That was the goal. So I dehydrate vegetables, I make some of my Shasta’s dog food, supplementing her dry kibble with what I hope is a healthier diet. I dehydrate sweet potatoes and bake pumpkin biscuits for her treats, surely healthier than some of the expensive things I’ve been buying in the stores. Oh, yes, and I cook for myself. Because my tastes have changed, and those processed, prepared easy meals that are so readily available in the stores no longer taste good to me. So I cook enough to eat for a few days, then I cook something else for a few days. It works for me. I stay within my property boundaries, recharging, pretending I’m on my own island. My primary contact, out of my choice, with you all.

There is hope – this election will soon be over, and then I will decide whether to hibernate more deeply in my cave, or whether I’m ready to face the world. Does everybody have those times?

Yet, still, I have enough. I have my kids, I have my friends, I have my Shasta. I have a warm home, I have food. I have enough. And I am surrounded by beauty.

Couldn’t decide if I could, in good conscious, click the ‘like’ button. Decided I would because I like that you have enough. We are in election override now, our candidate’s campaign is in high gear. We actually had to tell them we’re out of town so that they would stop asking us to help more. We’ll be out working on election day, but beyond that I just can’t do it any more. We live in a very conservative community and canvassing is hard for us here. So many closed minds. I guess ours are closed as well, as we have made our decision and it would take a LOT to change it, so I understand that the other side is of the same mindset.

  2. I’ll come up and visit after the election! I’m in Albany. …well anyway after 45 was elected all I could think to do was bake. A friend had given me a bag of persimmons and they needed to be used.
I keep one right wing FB friend just to find out what she is thinking. A very sweet kind woman but she passes on unbelievable lies. The latest was about how the Honduras refugees were a liberal plot 🤥
Oh well, we’re making chicken soup for the tummy and the Soul!

I’m on election propaganda overload right now. one side says the other is crooked and the other side says that side is crooked and back and forth and back and forth. personally I think they’re all crooked; it’s just which one is the worst crook???

Here in FL, the option for governor is one crook. Or the other crook. And POTUS has nothing better to do than feed his frenzied fanatics. I will hide in my cave, also. This is all too much. This post said it all, Carol. Said it all very well.

  6. I agree with how you feel. I try to ignore most of the news feed and just read my paper or digital subscription. It is still frustrating to read, but at least I don’t get bombarded by negative ads. I have maxed out my contributions to campaigns for the year so the only other thing I can do is get out and vote. I hope things improve after November 6th, but I am not sure things will really change that much. I too try to appreciate the good and beauty around me and focus on that. Stay sane and calm the next few weeks. Enjoy that beautiful view.

  7. I hibernate sometimes. I rarely watch the news on TV and I don’t buy newspapers but every morning I listen to the news on the radio and your President always seems to be a feature having said something else outrageous. I think if I lived there I’d cast my vote then go hide from it all. Our own politicians are bad enough.
Still, I have enough too, a home, pets, friends and family, books to read and blogs to write.

  8. I wish there was a rule that said you were not allowed to make disparaging remarks about your opponents. You were only allowed to tell the people why they should vote for you. I’m so sick of all the negativity!

  9. I completely understand. There has been a fundamental loss of decency with a considerable chunk of people in this country. There are some who say it has always been that way, but I disagree. In the second half of the last century, we made tremendous strides toward equality. Even the bigots and racists knew when to hold their tongue, because it was no longer accepted by the majority of people.

And here’s the key: there were CONSEQUENCES if you didn’t hold your tongue or you publicly stated something provably false. We had libel and slander laws, and your butt could end up in court if you were a public figure or a journalist or politician and you stated or published a falsehood. Then the Reagan Administration began to quietly dismantle some of those laws, as did the Bush Administrations, which directly led to Fox News and their ilk saying whatever they wanted to and calling it news without being held accountable.

Granted, there’s more to it than that, but the bottom line is that accountability has been lost. And things will not change until accountability again becomes the ideal it once was.

Sorry to rant. You hit just the right nerve and I couldn’t help myself. I’ll try to be better on my next visit… 😉

Do not apologize for stating truth in an impassioned manner. Apologies are required only when rants become vengeful and contain name calling. If the world crashes and burns, it will be the fault of our society I believe.

Oh Carol, I fell your pain and angst. I’ve stopped answering the phone if I don’t recognize the number because it’s just another bot call about a candidate. I mute all political commercials. And, scroll past the sponsored ads on social media. It’s disconcerting to witness the demise of civility in our country. The president tweets and the media has a feeding frenzy. HRC states the only way Democrats should be civil is if they take back the House and Senate. Instead of “going high” when Republicans are viewed as going low as Michele Obama said, Eric Holder says to “kick them.” Meanwhile Maxine Waters encourages liberal Democrats to harass members of the Trump administration. I don’t think all of this can be blamed on Trump. It’s a marked deviation from character and integrity in our culture as a whole. We are all responsible for our own words and actions. It seems civility disappeared long ago. Replacing it is a continual tide of mockery and disrespect that shows up in every corner of our culture. I doubt if anything will change if there is a ruling congressional overhaul. The players will change, the attitudes will not.

Meanwhile, Autumn is in full bloom in our part of the country; and it’s glorious this year! As you know, Entrepreneur is on a 90 day drug holiday from chemo, and he has already gained back 7 pounds! Keeping busy with homebody activities and focusing on family will keep us sane in an insane world. I always wish you enough and to never stop trying to find beauty in our world. xoxo

I agree. I think the fact that Trump was elected at all (this has nothing to do with political party for me – it has more to do with character of the man) is an indication of how far our society’s character has gone downhill. I hear his supporters say “he’s one of us” – I would not view that as a good thing myself. He is not alone in that lack of character in our government. I’ve filled out my ballot, will drop it at the box tomorrow, and I have done what I can. Now I can go back to my home behind closed doors – and continue to disassociate myself from that society, that anger and hatred. I’ll try to take the high road. I do not have a landline phone, but I have reset the ring tones for people in my contact list and so when a call comes in from anyone else, I ignore. If it’s important, they can leave a message.

Unfortunately, I fear a repeat of 2016… more red, more hatred, more negativity. For me, I’m overwhelmed by all the “nature is dying” news… I believe we are long past any hope of saving ourselves/our planet and just wonder when the majority of people will feel the same.. and what the ensuing wars will be like. Which, combined with politics (Brazill just went hard right and apparently already raided universities to “purge” any non-agreeing info and people), it’s no wonder I just slept for 1.5 days and expect to return to my hibernation within hours!

    Wish I had a better outlook. I don’t.

  12. Carol — When I find myself in a place of overwhelm with the various horrific events that occur, I always remember this quote from Mr. Rogers and it helps me.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

I, too, am exhausted by the hate + election BS. I want to hibernate as well. I’m by nature a somewhat solitary person so not interacting with anyone comes naturally to me. Thus I say that I find what your doing to be practical and sane. And as for making special treats for Shasta, what better use of your time could there be?

  14. Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting on the Barbra Streisand song “Lie to Me”. I am so NOT into politics…the trickery, deceit, the debate, all way too big for me to grasp, and besides, apparently I am enough of an empath, all this vitriol seeps into my cells and literally makes me ill.

Not that I’m not doing anything, believe me. I was affected enough by it all, I had decided not to bother, but the song inspired me to go ahead and vote!

There must be others like me who don’t/can’t be stirred into action by all the crap, but are touched enough by a song to MOVE!

Thanks again…oh and Shasta? Your photo above looks just like the area that surrounds my favorite mountain, Mt Shasta….is it?

Oh Carol, these can be heartbreaking times. It’s enough to make a person crazy, especially if you listen or watch the news too frequently. It’s hard to imagine this is happening in our country. I usually digest news once or twice a day (online), feel the feelings, try to figure out what action might be possible to take (that feels right) and then turn attention to things the heart loves and Spirit nudges toward. Often I feel like I could be doing more, and start to feel inadequate, but mostly it’s seen that we’re all being called to respond and act in different ways. An interesting aside–both my kids and husband are called to listen to news programs and podcasts and to actively follow and engage in politics. I told my daughter this week that I listened to a rare podcast. It was a spiritual podcast called Bliss & Grit. My daughter, who had been expecting it to be perhaps a political podcast, started laughing. “Why am I not surprised?” she asked. Hugs, my friend!
