Literally. Some days are squirrely. Yesterday was that kind of day for me. Taking a break from my chores to have a cup of tea, I sat in my chair by my window, and what did I see?
Yep. Squirrel. Feasting on the birdseed cake I’d put out for – not squirrels – the birds. The Chickadees, the Finches, possibly the Black-Headed Grosbeak. Disclaimer: these pictures were taken through the window, and the sunny day was creating problems with reflections. I did think about closing the blinds on the other windows, but wanted to get photos before the squirrel ran off.
Digging in now, getting more. I was enchanted, but I was also a wee bit apprehensive – was this squirrel going to devour the whole seedcake, and would any be left for the birds?
Then she turned and I got a glimpse of her belly – which is hard for you to see, I know, but it indicated this definitely is a she and it looked like she is a nursing mama.
Awwww. I could not chase away a nursing mama, particularly since I knew the tray feeders were empty. That was on my list to take care of, but I had not gotten to that part of the list yet. What to do? Let her eat. Let her take nourishment so she could supply nourishment for her young.
They are interesting creatures, these squirrels. Fun to watch sometimes, annoying sometimes – particularly when they learn how to overcome obstacles feeders sometime present in their relentless goal to get food. Particularly when learning to overcome that obstacle results in the destruction of a feeder. Lesson learned – more than once – do not use feeders with plastic lids. Squirrels have superpowers when it comes to chewing through plastic.
Ahhh, appetite sated now.
Momentarily sated, apparently. She is back up and at it.
Another angle, an attempt to avoid the reflections.
In my life, animals usually win. In my life, those big eyes, those furry bodies, lure me in. And it’s not just furry type animals, it is also the feathered creatures that visit my yard that delight me, captivate me, control me.
Oh! I must go make some more hummingbird nectar, lest the hummers and orioles perish from lack of nourishment!
Really great pictures… 😉

Hi Carol,
The squirrels are clever and voracious in my neck of the woods. I planted 60 tulip bulbs on my deck, so that I could see springtime blooms from my dining room table. I even covered the pots over with chicken wire, but only two were not devoured by squirrels! They are fascinating to watch, though, and I have a grudging admiration for their dexterity and determination. I very much enjoyed this post.

Beautiful! I especially love that last picture.
I met a baby squirrel once – it hopped onto my arm and made a strange purring sound when I stroked its head with my thumb. 🙂

Aw… I suspect the dogs keep them out of our garden for the most part. I’ve only seen one or two in all the years we’ve lived here!

You were kind to let the nursing mom eat your birdseed! At least you were contributing to a family meal! 🙂

Carol – The photographs are fantastic! I’m amazed at your gorgeous closeups. You either have one heckofa fantastic zoom, or you’re like Grizzly Adams and the critters don’t mind your presence.

Laurie, I have a 20x zoom, but the tree is only 4 or 5 feet from my window and I try to keep my movements to a minimum, although the squirrel was very focused on eating.

You are so right about the squirrels. I do hate the destruction they cause on bird feeders meant to keep them away, but watching them can be very amusing. Very cute pictures.

Squirrels can be annoying, but I usually throw extra seed on the ground so they have no reason to sabotage my feeders. It has also become a game with my dogs. They try to sneak up on the squirrels under the feeders, but the back door is a little too far away for the dogs to be successful. So far it has provided great amusement to watch and all the creatures are happy.

Squirrels sure are squirrely…doesn’t matter is the bird feeders are squirrel-proof, they always find a way. Even though I feed them, they still want the bird feed. So now I buy enough seed to include the squirrels! I love watching them as they are quite entertaining.

I live in a condo, so I don’t own land where I can sit and watch the wildlife. I like wildlife, but I hate yard work. I used to go to my friend’s house to watch the birds, squirrels, fox, and deer; but she just moved. I have considered putting a hummingbird feeder on my balcony.
I like your photos of the squirrel, especially the close-up. I take photos through windows all of the time – in the house and in the car. Personally, I sort of like reflections.

I like your squirrel pics, even through the window. Especially the one where it looks like the mama is splayed on the branch, sated. Did other squirrely things happen in your day, or was it just confined to actual squirrels?

Nothing else really squarely, unless you count squirting myself in the face with the hose when I was washing windows. I have special talents that way.

I count that. LOL! Have a few of those “special” talents, too.

Cute, annoying, feeding superpowers. You hit all the high spots! I’d have let the mama eat the bird food too. I am also a sucker for fuzzy ones. But so is the Petey Dog, so I don’t feed them lest he get Ideas.
