Have I Told You?

I suspect you already know more than you care to about me, but I was vacuuming this morning – something that doesn’t require real concentration – and the urge to tell you more hit me. So here I am, and you may read on, or say “OMG TMI!”

Vacuuming is not something I like to do – well, okay, so housework is not something I like to do – and it has been far too long since the vacuum last made friends with most of the house. It visits the kitchen and morning room most often, because those rooms house more crumbs, dog hair, general bits and pieces of debris, and because those rooms contain area rugs rather than carpet, which show the need for attention quickly. The area rugs are less because it’s what I want, but more because my old Bailey girl has problems with hard-surface flooring. So I am now feeling quite righteous, because the vacuum has visited about half the house this morning. It sits now, in a corner, waiting to visit the other rooms.

I also have worked on my Big Ocean Wave painting class this morning, and have gotten the wave to a point where I am not unhappy with it. I can see areas that need work, but that’s fine. I’m not asking perfection of myself, and I think my style is somewhat loose anyway. Most of the time. Sometimes it’s very loose. Other times it’s just a mess. My Facebook friends have already seen it, but for the rest of you, here it is:

Looking at this just feeds my desire to walk on an ocean beach. Maybe later this spring.

Have I also told you that laundry is a problem in this house? It seems to get stuck in the washer sometimes, but more often it gets stuck in the dryer. Not sure why, but actually completing a load in one day is very very hard for me. Let’s blame it on distraction – my mind is easily distracted and my washer and dryer don’t shout like the old ones did – they chime. Gently. Once. It’s easy to not hear, and easy to ignore if I do hear it. I like that they don’t shout, except apparently I require shouting to get my attention.

Have you ever thought about how many things shout at you in your home? There is, as I mentioned, the washer and dryer. The microwave. The timer on the kitchen stove. Your phone, landline or cell, when it wants your attention. Your tablet, laptop or desktop when someone wants your attention. Your doorbell or door knocker. If you have furry animals, they also make their wants/needs/desires known. Sometimes quite emphatically.

Have I told you what a nuisance it is that we have the changes in time – to daylight savings and then off daylight savings. Going to it isn’t so bad in this house, because my alarm is my Shasta dog, and when we “go forward” her clock does not reset, and she allows me to sleep a bit later. That’s a good thing, so we could just stay here, on daylight savings time? Please? I have managed to convert some of my clocks to atomic clocks that reset themselves, although others remain: the kitchen stove, the microwave, the thermostat, the coffee pot, my watches. My bathroom clock. You’d think I’m time obsessed, with that number of clocks. Oh yes, and the clock in the car, which always makes me think hard to remember how to reset it. It’s simple, really, but I told you about how my mind gets distracted? It also forgets very very well.

Have I told you we have more signs of spring showing up every day? It’s pure heaven, the greening of the grass and the budding of flowering plants and bushes. The skies have been more gray than blue, with rain many days. Enough to keep the ground too wet to do much outside yet, which in some ways is an irritant, but I’m not getting overly upset about it. Yet. I will, soon enough, if it continues this way. In the spring I am generally excited to get out and at least begin the cleanup process. But that excitement dims a little sooner every year. By fall I am usually considering getting rid of all flower beds because the grasses do better there oftentimes than the flowers, and because I’m just flat tired of it all. It’s a cycle, like the seasons.

I think now I’ve told you enough. I’m sure there’s more I could share, but hey! Gotta save some things for next time. And it might be good to quit before I go political.

Wishing you a day, a week, a month, a year, a lifetime of enough.

  1. Your wonderful wave makes me think of the Japanese stamps for sale in the post office today with paintings of just such a wave. I should have bought them; alas, I’ll have to go back! I can tell spring is in the air with all your penchant for cleaning! Keep painting!

  2. This whole post just left me grinning from ear-to-ear. Thanks for fun read.
I, by the way, hate my vacuum cleaner. So, cleaning gets done only when the sun shines just so and lights up the fuzzy surfaces, or when I start to stumble over the dust bunnies.

I often think about all the machines that demand my attention when all I want to do is just be. But they’re everywhere with their bells and quirks, looking at me, waiting for me to do something. Slave drivers, every one of them!

What a beautiful, wonderful ocean wave! You sound good, Carol. Must be the oncoming spring. đŸ™‚ I shut off a lot of the things that want to call out to me, and that might explain why my laundry gets stuck in either the washer or dryer, too.

  5. My thing is dusting…just can’t seem to do it. And even when I do it’s a little here or there so the house is never fully dusted. So different from 20 years ago when I dusted a few times each week!

I agree with Maggie. Just smiled my entire way through this post. My husband vacuums. He’s retired. I work. Done.

I hate housework too. I don’t know why it needs to be done so frequently. I think I might do some tomorrow though because it’s going to rain all day. Maybe. Maybe I’ll do housework. Maybe I’ll just nap. We’ll see. I don’t think you and I are very different.

I realized there’s no reason for me to drive out to see desert blooms… there are desert flowers blooming all over Long Beach. One of my cacti had 6 large bloom stalks but I missed the days they were actually open.
Washer and dryer: all alert noises have been turned off. The microwave: Don’t have one. The timer on the kitchen stove: Don’t use it.. toaster oven has 1 quite “ding” (but, again ,rarely used). Phone, landline or cell: Landline turned off; cell kept in airline mode or power off.
Tablet, laptop or desktop: All kept at volume Off and are turned off when not in active use. Doorbell: Disconnected it years ago. Only furry animals make noise at this house!!
Re: housework, we are birds of a feather. Except you seem to vacuum more than me.

Need timers or things burn/go too long/don’t happen. No landline, but cell – what if one of my kids or a friend needs me? Although my I’m Sleeping app won’t recognize that I reset it to wake at 8:00 and Amazon or JoAnns think 7:00 is a good time to share with me.

Can’t decide if I like the post more or the painting. Oh, forget it. It’s a tie.

  11. You always have such lovely shades of blue in your pictures. I think that’s what I like most about them.
I’m not a fan of vacuuming and will do almost any other unpleasant household job to put off doing it. Last weekend I even washed my kitchen ceiling so I could feel virtuous and put off vacuuming for another day.
Clocks! We go back tomorrow night so they will have to be done again. Good thing I was too lazy to change the living room clock last spring and gave up using the clock on the microwave at all. That is two less to worry about.

LOL! This was a great read. I love the wave scene and it makes me want to walk on that beach (any beach) as well since we missed out trek to warm beaches earlier this year. There are lots of things in my house that shout at me. But, I’m getting good at selective hearing. đŸ™‚ Lately, I’ve noticed a significant lack of motivation for much of anything except the bare minimum. I need some warmer weather to pull me out of this mental funk. The muse hasn’t been very attentive lately.

I know exactly what you mean about a funk. Winter seemed very long and very gray this year, but now that the grass is greening and the sun is shining, I’m perking up. You have more reason than I though, with the extra stresses.

I don’t know why, but I’m in that class of people who does the laundry all in one go. Not all of the laundry, but the whole process. I don’t have any of the chimes turned on, but I’m very methodical about it. I know, it’s annoying.
As for shouting, I also have all the sounds on my computer turned off, I turn off all the numerical “badges” on my phone that indicate when social media is calling, and I’d turn off the chimes on the dang microwave if I could. Whoever designed that thing clearly never had to live with it. It shouts three times – three – every time it’s done. The only way you can get it to stop is if you hit the stop button BEFORE you open the door. If you open the door, it’s too late, and it will shout at you three times no matter what. Apparently it shouts enough for all my other appliances. Even Petey doesn’t shout. I better go get him up – it’s 10:30 here!
