Questions – Just Because

I just ran across some questions, posted by Embeecee who got them from Willow. I’m sitting here, taking a break, so I thought to myself, “why not?”, and myself replied, “sure, go ahead.”

1. Do you enjoy food from countries that are not your own? Yes, most of them. There are some at which I’ll draw the line – usually those involving items not generally considered meant for human consumption in this country.

2. When you prepare salad for yourself, do you rip your greens (lettuce, spinach, &c…), or do you cut them? Most often I cut them – although when I used to use iceberg lettuce, I’d rip it. Now my salad greens usually consist of spinach, kale, miscellaneous greens and romaine.

3. There’s a saying that goes: “Life is short, eat dessert first.”  What do you think of that advice? Sometimes I think that’s great advice, but most often I skip dessert, or share it.

4. Have you ever thrown spaghetti against the wall to test for doneness? — If it sticks, it’s done (so they say) — What other such kitchen habits might you have? No – that seems silly to me. I mean, why make more work for yourself? Unless, of course, you get a kick out of it, want to decorate your kitchen in a very unique way, or have someone that cleans up after you regularly.

5. How often do you eat fish? Rarely. If I eat fish, it cannot smell at all fishy, and I generally prefer to eat fish when I eat out because then I don’t have to deal with that smell in the house.

6. When purchasing food for yourself, do you check the nutritional label? If so, what are you checking for? Sometimes I check the nutrition label – most often if I’m buying broth I’ll check the sodium level, purchasing the lowest sodium I can find. Then I go two aisles down and buy potato chips. I think it’s compensation – like buy cheap so you can afford a luxury. Or something.

7. How often do you eat salad as a meal? In hot weather, I like a big dinner salad – greens, tomatoes (or oranges), boiled egg, beans – of the red or white kind, not of the green bean kind – maybe some chicken or tuna salad, whatever else excites me at the moment of creation.

8. Do you have any food quirks? For example: do you arrange a particular food in a certain way before eating? Or eat certain foods in a particular way every time? (i.e.: bite the heads off of gummy bears) When I was a kid, my food had to be separated and I would eat all of one thing before I started another. I also used to always eat the crust off the bread before I’d eat the part of the sandwich that had something on the bread. Now, I seem to prefer one-dish meals with everything mixed together where no decisions about eating order are required.

9. When boiling water for pasta or whatnot, what are your “tricks” for keeping the water from boiling over? A wooden spoon across the top of the pan, which I learned the hard way after many messes were created on my stove top. I rarely use oil in the water because I recently read that sauce will not stick to pasta as well if cooked with oil. Don’t really know if that’s true.

10. Are there any recipes that have been passed down through the generations in your family? Have you passed them to anyone outside of your family? or are they a closely guarded secret? Not really. I have my Mother’s cinnamon roll recipe, although usually when I make sweet rolls now I prefer sticky buns.

11. In general, how do you feel about “diet” foods? Meaning: foods with artificial sweeteners or alternative fats in them. For example: Diet soda or low fat muffins. In general I ignore them. I try to eat healthy but I do give in to the need for comfort foods as needed.

12. Have you purchased food online? What do you think about that idea?  Yes. I’m a fan of online shopping because I really don’t like shopping in stores. I used a meal delivery service for awhile and it was so convenient to have someone else decide what to fix and provide ingredients in the appropriate amounts, but then I felt a quality of sameness set in and missed some of my easy to make favorites. There are some things I usually order from Costco or Amazon rather than buying them at the store – less handling for me that way.

13. When cooking for you and yours, what kinds of experiments have you tried? Some with not-so-good results, that I prefer not to discuss. My daughter is a much more imaginative cook than I – I’m much better off with a recipe.

14. Do you now, or have you ever, grown or raised any of the food you eat? Oh yes. When my kids were little, we always grew lots of tomatoes and corn and I canned both. After I retired, I had a garden for a few years, but the growing part of the year where I live now is very very short, subject to frost in any month, so it just became more of a challenge than it seemed worth. And I got older and lazier.

15. Are you a vegetarian? If not, has the idea of becoming one ever crossed your mind? I’ve never made a conscious effort to be a vegetarian, but meat doesn’t matter much to me so I often eat meatless meals. I could easily be a vegetarian, but never a vegan because I wouldn’t want to give up my cheese and eggs.

16. When arranging the food on your plate, does everything have to be separated, or is it okay for your food to touch? When I was a kid, things had to be separate, and I would eat all of one thing before I ate another. Now, most of what I cook is one-dish meals, so there’s no separating kinds of food.

17. When eating out, what foods on the menu might push you out of your comfort zone? (for example: pineapple on pizza makes some people twitch) I want my food cooked, I won’t eat anything that anchovies have met, and I won’t eat anything that still has eyes.

18. Do you have a sweet tooth? If so, what kinds of foods generally satisfy the craving? Chocolate. Nearly always chocolate. Unless I’m on a salty food binge.

19. What foods (if any) do you like to mix that other people might find strange? Can’t think of any. Although I do think beer tastes really good when drunk while eating ice cream.

20. When eating out, at what kind of restaurant do you prefer to dine? Comfortable. Not fussy, not prissy. Must be clean.

21. In general, how do you feel about organic food? I think if it’s something that isn’t going to be peeled, it’s a good thing to buy, although I’m not sure our FDA restrictions are what they should be to call food organic.

22. What foods (if any) do you eat when you are happy or unhappy? I eat whatever when I’m happy – no special cravings. When unhappy, I eat whatever – unless I’m majorly unhappy, heavy-duty stressed – then I don’t eat.

Sorry – my first publication of this post did not have answers to questions 15-22. They were there when I proofread, but not when I published. Sigh.

  1. Carol — I just learned something new. I never knew that if you lay a wooden spoon across the top of a pan it prevents it from boiling over. That’s so interesting!

    It’s interesting that you don’t eat when you’re major-league unhappy. I think some of us experience the opposite–that we’re always reaching for food at those times thinking they’ll make us feel better.

    Beer floats are a trending thing… usually with a stout or porter beer and usually only offered at special events. I’m guessing you’d like those.

    I’m pretty much a 1-dish eater too. It’s usually a bowl. All my food touches all my other food, and they all get mixed, or I don’t cook them together in the first place. I’m so into bowls that I actually had to go out to buy some plates when I got on a “fried eggs on toast” kick.
