Friday Morning Fretting

I’ve been pretty quiet about a lot of things that bother me lately – which might also mean I’ve gotten better about not letting things bother me. Still, there are things I wonder, fret, worry about and do not understand.

Why do we humans have so much trouble reading words and taking them at their value? Why do we seem to need to twist them the direction we want them to go? For example – Oregon recently (as in the past year) adopted a bill allowing the court to levy a “risk assessment” which would require that those people deemed high risk of danger to themselves or others would be forbidden to have deadly weapons. The text, in part, reads as follows:

SECTION 2. (1) A law enforcement officer or a family or household member of a person
may file a petition requesting that the court issue an extreme risk protection order enjoining
the person from having in the person’s custody or control, owning, purchasing, possessing
or receiving, or attempting to purchase or receive, a deadly weapon.
(2) An extreme risk protection order petition shall be heard by the court and issued or
denied on the same day the petition is submitted to the court or on the judicial business day
immediately following the day the petition is filed.
(3) The petition for an extreme risk protection order must be supported by a written af-
fidavit signed by the petitioner under oath, or an oral statement taken under oath by the
petitioner or any other witness the petitioner may produce.
(4) In determining whether to issue an extreme risk protection order, the court shall
consider the following:
(a) A history of suicide threats or attempts or acts of violence by the respondent directed against another person.

This seems pretty clear cut to me – and what I read tells me that maybe those school shooters, who obviously fit the category of “extreme risk”, could have been prevented with a law such as this one. Yet, I talk to people – gun owners who are very protective of their right to own guns – who interpret this to mean that if I got angry at them for something, I could call the police and say they threatened me and the police would come and take their guns. Whoa! I guess the words have different meanings for you than they do for me.

Then there are the climate change deniers. I will admit that there is the possibility that some weather conditions are cyclical, but I have a really hard time attributing all of the extreme weather we’ve been having in recent years to that. Scientists have proven that our seas are rising (and no, to the elected Congress person who said it’s because the White Cliffs of Dover are disintegrating and falling into the ocean, thereby raising the water level, I’m not buying your theory), hurricanes have come in greater number and greater force, tornados also are now coming with greater force, weather changes are more rapid, air quality is decreasing, our water sources are threatened with greater pollution – due to recent government decisions – and I wonder, will there be a world that is habitable for our grandchildren and their children?

The growing division, the increasing hatred, racism, fear, anger, in this country is frightening. We are all human beings, the difference in color, eye shape, religious beliefs, make us no more or less human than the guy standing next to us. What is so hard about living and letting live? Why can’t we be more generous with our love for our fellow man? Why do so many of us embrace extremism?

So there you have my greatest frustrations, fears, sadnesses. There you have the reasons I am most happy to stay in my own little world, my five acres of earth space, with my furry girl.

To end on a happier note, there are signs of hope, faith, and beauty in my world.

I hear you. I got a mail from my main client (American company) today about how bad things are looking for the R&D company, in terms of Federal funding because the company tries to find solutions for pressing environmental issues. I am scared. Partly because if the company fares badly, I’ll be without a job, but mostly because where is the world heading?
    But yeah, there’s always hope.

That gun thing sounds sensible, which may be why some gun owners are freaked out by it. A question I’d have for THEM is “do you respect your right to have the gun? Do you use it responsibly? If so, why are you worried? “They” are after the nutbags who threaten and harm others without thought, not responsible gun owners who realize they hold life and death in their hands when they handle their weapon.” As to the rest of it? This has happened throughout history…and maybe it’s just our turn to follow in the path of the dinosaurs and allow the earth to heal herself from what damage mankind has done. I worry about the same things as you, I just have decided to give it over to God to sort out. I can’t do anything about it anyway.. Feel better dear. At least you have a great blog community to come talk to, right? 😀

    First, those pics are wonderful!!
Second, gun owners in particular seem incapable of interpreting words, ANY words, as anything other than “we’re gonna take all your guns from you.”
Third, reposted a paraphrasing of a black comedian (famous but I keep forgetting his name) who joked that we need to set a day when black call the cops on whites for the same innocuous activities for which whites have been calling on them, and even getting the arrested. I LOVE this idea (seriously). But when I shared it in someone’s fb comments all hell broke loose… about how I’d be treated if jailed and all these other things… completely missing the point that whites are treated better than blacks and the crap going on lately is redonkulous. I mean even TMZ joked that the real result would be the white person would be excused and black caller would get arrested for a false claim. Gahhhhhhh!

You are way too correct with what would happen if a black person called the police because a white person was sitting in a coffee shop but had not yet bought coffee. Or if a black person kiilled a white person who was in his yard holding a cell phone so it could be seen as a gun. Fair doesn’t exist in too many situations.

Yes, that policy sounds reasonable…to a reasonable person. I also can envision those who would try and twist the wording to fit a particular situation. In short, people sometimes lie in the heat of the moment. I’d think there would also need to be checks and balances with medical and criminal reports before the court would simply take another person’s word on the petition. Climate change? I believe it’s something that should be monitored on an objective level and not thrown up for the purpose of political divisiveness. Monitoring sea levels and temperature seems reasonable in determining ice cap melting. Of course greenhouse emissions have increased since the 1800s causing temps to rise. Technology and industrialization increased as well since that time…the result of innovation and progress. I also believe everyone is responsible for taking care of this planet and not abusing its resources. Our world is so amazing…and unique. There’s not another planet known to science that can sustain life the way we know it. What does our future hold? No one on this planet knows for sure. I will try and do my part, hope others will do the same, and leave the rest to the one who created it to begin with.

I believe the Oregon law has that checks and balances, in that it calls for the court to consider previous behavior as to suicidal or violent episodes. No law will be perfect, but something needs to be done because our children and teachers and school staff should not have to be afraid to go to our schools. As to preserving our planet, it is a responsibility that each of us has, but I don’t think it unreasonable for government agencies and the corporate/industrial world to do the same. It’s all in moderation, which is something that seems to be going by the wayside anymore. You are one of the intelligent people who will think things through – another thing that seems to be going by the wayside.

I agree that the whole world seems to be crazy. And I often don’t want to leave my little quiet piece of the world.

  6. Dear Carol,
It’s difficult not to fret these days, for obvious reasons. It’s important to be able to look at the world and find the beauty and goodness that soothes and let’s us keep going. Your photo of your furry girl on the couch is superb!

Very disturbing. A world controlled by egos is not a pretty or safe place to live, it feels. But your photos point us toward something beyond egos. Thank you.

I fret, too, Carol. I recently took a vacation from all the news of the world and coming back into it again is jolting, to say the least. One of my granddaughters (she’s 9 years old) described their active shooter drills. Some my age say it isn’t any worse than the duck and cover drills we had as children, preparing us for nuclear war (as if hiding under a desk would make difference in that event!). Maybe they are right, but I guess I hoped the world would be a better place by the time I grew up.

Listening to the girl that was interviewed after the Texas shooting who said she was not “surprised” about the shooting, hit a nerve with me. Yes, we had occasional duck and take cover drills, but – at least to me – it never seemed that we were at real risk of imminent danger. It now seems that it’s a very real part of every young person’s life. That is a very sad statement about our country, I think.
