Oh Heather, I Cannot Compete!

A few days ago, one of my bloggy friends posted a photo. She is Heather Higham, whose photography just blows my mind. Anyway, the photo she posted that made an immediate leap into my heart was this one:

She gave me permission to try to paint this with my newest love, alcohol inks. So I tried. My first effort:

Not happy. Not at all happy. Try again:

Nope. Still not happy. Maybe the third time will be the charm?

Oh my! Nope. Nope. Nope. Heather, I cannot compete!

Perhaps I should stick to my Whatzits.

  3. Carol β€” Love her photograph. I like your last alcohol ink drawing and your “Whatzits.”

The third one is beautiful. You shouldn’t expect an alcohol ink painting to be able to reproduce that stunning photo. Not sure I like your first attempt (the colours are a bit dull for my taste) but the second and third are great and stand on their own merits. πŸ™‚

I agree with you about the colors in my first one. I need to relax more and lighten up on my self-criticism – although they still don’t please me.

Your Whatzits are adorable! And your third attempt is very ‘van Gogh’ so keep on, Carol. I think you are doing great.

I adore your whatzits! I like the sand in the first, sunset in the second and blue part of sky in third…cut and paste, you heard it here first, ha!

  7. Hi Carol,
You’re right–that is a stunning photo–out of this world. But I think you did pretty well capturing it. The first painting is my favorite–I really like your interpretation of the sky. And I love your whatzits!

I’m so glad it’s not a competition! I think your attempts are all lovely in different ways. I’m impressed at how well you control the inks. The bluffs look great and detailed in all three, and the water is perfect. I imagine it’s tougher trying for a specific texture in the sand and sky. For what it’s worth, I’ve also had an oil painter tell me those lines in the sand are tough to recreate.
In other news, those Whatzits are adorable. I think they’d sell well at certain galleries in your area. I can think of one place here where they’d fit right in.

Maybe smearing some more color into and above the sun. Her sun doesn’t look big and round

Your whatzits are so cute! The photo is amazing, and I can see how that would be difficult to reproduce. I think it’s the texture. In any case, I think all three attempts are good. πŸ™‚
