Dragonfly, Hummingbirds and the Moon

This has been a bonus year for hummingbirds visiting our feeders. We’ve had half a dozen each of the past several years, but this year we have – we estimate – about a dozen. And one or two varieties we’ve not had before. I think. I’m finding it very difficult to differentiate those small differences between one type of hummer and another.

20130725-083412.jpgThis is a through-my-window-morning photo of a fluffy little girl – maybe a Black-Chinned Hummer, but I won’t swear to it.

20130725-085009.jpg Shimmering wings – taken right after the hummer photo above. Dragonflies delight me, such delicate creatures they are. Of course, with my passion for sparkle, how could I resist?

20130725-085536.jpg Sitting on the deck late evening as the sun was setting, the hummers were in full force, flitting, dancing, squabbling, being their hummingbird-selves. Pleasing us with their entertainment.

When the show was over – when the hummers were no longer demonstrating their flamenco, their rhumba, their waltz – the full moon was smiling on us.

Truly, an evening filled with enough.

I adore the silhouette shot. My hummers are MIA this year. I see one every once in a while late in the evening but not like last year when they were fighting over the feeders all day. I miss them.

I’m envious of your hummingbirds. Our yard doesn’t have them. We need to plant flowers for them next year!

I like how you described their dance. Great choice of words. We have more hummingbirds than usual this year–maybe eight, compared to three. We had sixteen during the migration. You’re lucky to have more than one variety to admire.

  9. I know we have dragonflies here in San Diego County because I have seen four of them in my twenty years here……………lol

One was actually a couple a days ago. I pulled into the driveway and there was a beautiful blue dragonfly sitting on a plant outside my office window. I was so excited. Yes, I did get pictures, which I’ll probably post sometime this week.

You must have your camera nearby at all times. I am visited by hummers while out reading, but they fly off when I go for the camera. I love the fluffy one and the silhouette.
