Has Anyone Seen My Patience?

I think I put it somewhere safe. My patience, that is. I suspect some of my sense of humor is in the same place. I have looked and looked, but it is nowhere to be found. I’ll try again tomorrow.

This morning I wandered about the yard to take some pictures. Venturing far from home is difficult now – far being, like, beyond the end of the driveway. My reward for venturing into the yard in the (relatively) early morning? Mosquito bites! Fine! I did get more pictures than I did bites though, so I think that’s a win. Maybe.

Did you know bees burrow right into the blossom of the Penstemon? I didn’t. Until this morning when I saw them doing it. The problem is, once they get in you can’t see them, so a picture of the bee burrowed loses something. They also do not like to sit still for very long. Obviously they have not been taught portrait etiquette.

We are back to hot weather. I don’t like hot weather. I don’t like when going out the door into the sunshine makes me want to curl up in a ball and roll down the little slope into the pond. With the fish. And the snails. And the water bugs. You know, the kind that skate along on the surface of the water. I’d like to be able to do that. Skate on top of water. I’d also like to be able to skate along the surface of ice, but my feet and legs seem to think that’s a foreign action. Not something I should do. I learned this many years ago, when the idea of falling on hard ice was not a big deal. Now? Now falling on any surface is a big deal. That’s one of the pleasures of maturity.

Maturity has many of those pleasures. Like not remembering the safe place once put one’s patience. And sense of humor.

20130720-233312.jpg
I remember when I stayed up until 2 or 3 in the morning on weekends. And slept until 10 or 11. Obviously that part of my memory still works. What I don’t remember is why that seemed like a good idea at the time.

See that? I have Nasturtiums blooming! I haven’t had much luck with them here in past years, so I am thrilled that they are making pretty for me now. If only Lily didn’t think in the middle of them was a good place to lay. Okay, so I didn’t catch her in the act, but I’m pretty sure it was neither Bailey nor Shasta. And Twiggy? No. She says no. She says she is an innocent. It had to be Lily.

Evening clouds, with just a touch of blush. It’s important not to overdo the blush. Too much and suddenly a thing of beauty becomes a garish overload of color. The evening clouds are discreet and wise. Don’t you agree?

20130720-233851.jpg
Now if only those evening clouds would share some of their wisdom, and give me a hint. Just a hint. Where the heck did I put that patience? And that sense of humor? They’ve got to be here somewhere!

  1. Dear Carol,
Your sense of humor didn’t go anywhere. “Evening clouds, with just a touch of blush. It’s important not to overdo the blush.” This is some really fine writing, and you found beauty and interest in your world, in spite of everything. You haven’t lost your courage either, or your kindness. Take good care of yourself–and I know you will still find beauty even just a few steps outside your door.

Carol, my dear, your sense of humour is clearly still with you and functioning perfectly! I can’t say that I loved this post, because clearly you are not a happy bunny right now, but it’s beautifully crafted and the photos are very lovely and bring a sense of peace. You yard looks delightful – and is that a wild strawberry plant? I haven’t seen one of those for years!

Take a deep breath. This too shall pass. Maybe not in the way you’d like, but it will pass, and you will survive. Sending strong, supportive vibes across The Pond along with a hug.

  3. Don’t worry, Carol, I’m sure you’ll find your patience again. I don’t like hot weather either and feel impatient with it and all that goes along with it. Love the “evening clouds with a touch of blush,” the Penstemon and that beautiful water lily. 🙂

LOL, your sense of humor (and wit too!) are definitely not lost! This post is adorable. I love how you featured a flower that looks just like a little sun when you mentioned the hot weather – perfect!

Carol, You always take such beautiful photos! I have risked mosquito bites only two times this summer – once to try my luck at fireworks and the other time to try to capture the sunrise. I got bit both times, and it wasn’t worth my effort. But, you take perfect pictures. The older I get, the less tolerant of heat I become, and the more my husband seems to enjoy it.

I will concur with the others; that your sense of humor is still intact. Maybe you’ll find your patience, eventually. Take care. Thinking of you.

Patience in hot weather always goes elsewhere. It’s a wonder countries don’t declare war during extended heat waves. Hope your weather changed since yesterday. Our temps finally plummeted two days ago and it’s supposed to be only in the 60’s today. Thank goodness.

  9. Clearly your sense of humor is right where it’s always been – shining brightly in your blog posts. Your patience, however, has probably run off with mine as it relates to bird-sized, blood-sucking mosquitos. I’ve had it!

Who cares about patience when your sense of humor is serving you so well? Life might be serving up some seriously bitter lemons right now, but this post shows you’re able to make lemonade out of it all. And if that doesn’t turn out, at least you have your flowers and porch paradise.

I think your patience and mine have gone on vacay together. i’m sure they are somewhere, drinking wine and giggling at us struggling to remain calm. And I agree with Heather, you seem to be compensating with your wonderful wit. 🙂 Love your garden shots…especially that yellow and red beauty. xoxo

  12. I hear your sense of humor loud and clear, Carol. And your search for patience will be successful as long as you take the time to capture those beautiful photos. I love the water lily and the hint of sunset. Hang in there. I’ll be thinking of you.

Enjoyed your pretty flowers, and the thought of a pond on a hot day. I don’t see you lacking in any of the above mentioned traits.

My goodness Carol, what a beautiful series of photos these are! It sounds to me as if you are feeling the summer frumps, I should know, as I go through them every single summer. I’m not a big fan of the heat either, it just rattles my equalibrium. But the good news is, the heat won’t stay forever, the cool will return, as will your elusive patience and sense of humour. Sending hugs your way.
