It is All the Same, Yet it is Not

Each year I wander about my world, taking pictures, searching, enjoying – each year it is the same, yet it is not. This year the growing green things seem taller, seem more vivid, seem fuller.

Last year? Did I think everything was the same as the year before, or did I think everything was taller, more vivid, fuller? Is everything the same, or is it different? It’s all a matter of perception and memory, isn’t it?

This morning, as I have my coffee and watch my world outside my window, I note that the baby swallows have left the camera house – the camera is still there, but it has not worked this year. That is different. The baby bluebirds have apparently left their house, as their parents have not been around for a few days. In other houses, the flurry of swallows hovering nearby indicate there are babies ready to venture out into this big world. Activities remain the same, the timing may be a little different. Earlier this year, perhaps.

Today it is sunny, a nearly perfect early summer day. Today I’ll go out and mow the grass, before the rains that are to come tomorrow. While I mow, my mind will wander. Probably it’ll wander to the things I need to get done during the next couple of days. The bedrooms that are largely unused by humans most of the year now need to be readied for the kids. The Kat will be here Tuesday night or Wednesday morning – her room tends to collect “things” during the months she is not here. Those “things” need to be put into a proper home and dusting and vacuuming needs to happen. Not to mention rewashing the bed sheets because my clothesline opted to break while the sheets were hanging on it. I tried.

How is it, I wonder, that when we moved here nearly 14 years ago, we had so much extra space. We didn’t have the garage yet, but we had all these wonderful closets and cupboards, and empty spaces! Now? Not so much. That’s why that bedroom collects “things”. How is it I have the winter blankets from our bed, but they seem to have no place to rest during the summer, so they end up as some of the “things” in that bedroom. Is it possible that I have a bit of “hoarder” in me? Time, once again, to sort, to make piles for Goodwill. Or the burn pile.

20130622-092207.jpg
Like pillows. I save pillows. I deem a pillow unfit for sleeping on and replace it with a new pillow. So why on earth do I save the old pillow? What possible use can I think I might have for it?

20130622-092346.jpg
Who knows what else I might find when I start looking. It could be interesting. That is a job Kat will help me with when she is here – I know this, because she will be bringing things to store here while she is in Korea, and we will need to make room for those things. The bad part of this is she may start to wonder about her mother’s sanity when we discover the odd things that have been saved. There is that possibility.

Then again, she probably already knows her mother’s sanity left a long time ago. And that’s just fine. I have enough. Why would I need sanity?

As always, I love your photos. Isn’t it amazing how “stuff” seems to procreate!! Just the other day I stood in the middle of our rig and exclaimed that I have TOO MUCH STUFF!! Hugs to you and hope to see you soon!

  2. Carol – The photographs you’ve woven throughout this post are exquisite! As to “things”…I have a minimalist heart/mindset. If it’s not nailed down, it’s outta here 🙂

  3. Stunning pics and so glad to hear I am not the only one who saves the oddest assortment of stuff that cannot possibly be useful. Maybe insanity rules, here in the blogosphere

So glad you’ll have Kat’s company soon. It is special when our babes return to our nests–even if the nests have gotten a little filled. Our daughter is coming home in a week and then our son will be here for a few short days in early July. It’s a special time in the nest.

  5. Your flower pictures are beautiful, Carol. Like you, I often wonder why we continue to save things, like old pillows that we no longer use anymore. Are we thinking we just one day might have more guests than beds and then will need those extra pillows when the guests sleep on the sofa? I dread going back to my house in Virginia as I’ve heard that nothing has been cleaned out in my absence, even though my family intended to declutter. I think it’s because we all need to be in attendance when these decisions are made, and that’s next to impossible to arrange!

It will great to see Kat before she goes to Korea. How long will she be there? When does she go?

Amazing how quickly clutter accumulates, isn’t it?

Kat will be here until she leaves for Korea August 12. Geoff will be here sometime in July.

      • Love that quote. I’m sure sure you’ll be excited to see Geoff too. How long will he stay? Will he return to Oman after his visit?

Geoff is in the SF Bay Area right now, will be going to LA to host a group of Chinese kids for a week and will be up here the end of July. Yes, he’ll be going back to Oman for at least another year.

You are not alone. I save old pillows and other odd things. We move a lot, and every time we move, we throw away or give away more stuff than I am aware has collected. With another move in about a month, it is time to start again. My husband wanted to do the attic today. It is going to hit at least 90 degrees and it is unbearably humid. I didn’t remind him about the basement.

We haven’t even moved yet, and my husband has started talking about the resale. Yes, I am insane! How else could I manage to move four times in as many years (maybe five years – it is hard to keep track).

Your photos are so beautiful. You must have such a lovely yard. You certainly have a good eye for composition.

Enjoy your visit with your daughter 🙂

You are so not alone. I want to purge just about everything…but that seems such a big job that I can not begin. And I have too many pillows too. Sigh….

We clean our closets about twice a year. Those Goodwill trips keep us from accumulating too much.
We think that after last spring and summer, the plants have stored up their energy and are using it all this year. My allergies are actually acting up this year (never a problem before), and I cannot keep our house free from pollen.
So happy your kids are coming home for a bit. I’m sure you’ll find lots of fun stuff to get into…like kayaking? 🙂

Oh my goodness! I hoard pillows as well. Finally gave them to a homeless shelter. I break out in hives thinking about cleaning out closets from all the stuff I’ve shoved in them. On the up side, your photos are wonderful! I loved looking at them in between your thoughts.

Ha, sanity and motherhood don’t always go together…and yes, we do hoard memories and all that stuff our children drop off between moves. My friend and I were just talking about how much storage space our grown children’s things take!

I just went through a bit of a clean up this past week but for me it was old electronic equipment … WHY would I stuff the old printer into a drawer, another on a shelf. Heaven knows the stuff is obsolete before you even get it home from the store so WHY (again) would I store the old one when installing a new one ??? Part of it is I hate to put stuff at the end of the driveway … there HAS to be a use for this old stuff, someone who wants to do something with it … surely. So until I find that someone I stuff it into a drawer, or put it on a shelf. Oh, and I DID find someone who could use the old printers – Yay me. I should have charged them storage …

Carol, I’m sure you must know you are not alone in the world of clutter and accumulation of who-knows-what. I often think of what a nightmare it will be when it finally comes time to sell and pack up this house. ( I’d love to move closer to the shore someday in the distant future but who knows if that will actually happen). Since you recognize the fact that you have saved things that really don’t need to, I’m thinking that means that you still have a good chunk of your sanity, lol!
Your flowers are a treat! 🙂

I am a terrible hoarder. I vow to clear out and perhaps sort out a small area then get tired and bored and drop it ’till the next time’. I don’t know how to do it, and that’s the truth! But I must, because the clutter is depressing me.

Your photos are very lovely. It certainly does look as if this is a great year for growing things – maybe the late spring has them running to catch up? Enjoy!
