When the Spring Winds Howl and Snow/Rain Fall From the Sky

What is one to do? When our part of the world has not yet awakened to discover that it is, indeed, spring – just check the calendar, it says it is – what is one to do?

Sleep. One thing one could do is sleep. As I sit at the desktop, the girls get comfortable and sleep. This day I was at the desktop because there are some things I must do at the big computer. The iPad is a wonderful thing, and it has become my go-to thing, but it has some limitations and so I go back to the world of the big computer with the big monitor to edit my photos, download music (because the music will go on my phone) and some other non-daily things I do for pleasure and because I must. Or because I choose to. Or just because.

The Lily has many positions of pure comfort. Many places of pure comfort. I find her on beds sometimes. More often on the shelf in the closet that holds the extra blanket. Or in another closet, on other folded up blankets. Occasionally on the folded towels on the bathroom shelves. Or on chairs, like this day. She seems to have favorite spots for awhile until that spot goes out of favor and she finds another. Some are high, some are low, but she fears no disturbance because she is in charge. She is (cat)woman, she is strong.

Watch. One can also watch. Watch for a friend to come down the driveway. A friend who might pet or play because heaven knows these girls do not get enough of that from their family. Just ask, they’ll share with you their experiences of neglect and abuse. Watch for a delivery truck. The UPS driver is a favorite because he always has treats for puppies. Granted, they must sit properly before he gives them their treat, but they can do that when they know they will be rewarded. No reward offered, obedience is a sometimes thing. Watch also in case intruders appear on the public road at the end of the driveway. Intruders like people who live in the neighborhood, but hey! That road belongs to my girls and permission to enter must be requested and granted.

Watch me. In case I make a move towards something involving edible items. Or head towards the door to go outside. Or maybe just look bored and need something warm and alive to pet, to hug, to say sweet things to. The girls know that humans need comfort and are more than willing to provide opportunities to pet. To make life better for their humans, of course!

Until our part of the world opens its door and lets spring in, what we can do is watch and sleep. And hunger for warmth and green growth, blossoms in many colors, and our glass of wine on the deck in the evening.

Spring will come. Hurry, spring!

  1. You had me right at the first photograph, but then I plunged right into those liquid brown eyes at the end.

They are so cute when they’re sleeping aren’t they! Also when they’re awake! I awarded you the gold star for recognizing Katie and her pink pig by the way.

Waiting for spring – it can be a long term occupation yet this year we had March in February and April in March … until yesterday when March came roaring back and dipped below 0C causing my daffies to nod their heads in resignation. An aside, one of your girls looks a lot like our Jax …

Oh to be a cat, where all places and positions are cozy. Your poor girls do indeed look neglected 😉

Spring has come to my part of the world, early most say! But tomorrow a taste of winter is to return.

Oh no. I was so hoping your post today would be announcing the arrival of some pretty spring flower. The seasons are so messed up everywhere! We’ve had 80 degree days, which, while nice, is much too hot for this time of year. Everything is a month ahead of schedule, and I’m wondering if we’ll now have snow before October!

Carol, I’m meeting Lily for the first time and she’s just beautiful! Your other two girls are very lovely (and soulful) too 🙂

Look at thier eyes, and those beautiful expressive faces. Cats and dogs don’t have any need for words, their faces say it all! Perhaps we humans could learn a thing or two from our fury friends. 🙂

I can definitely see these scenes happening in my household too. I think my dogs would try to tell the same sad story of “neglect and abuse” – pathetic aren’t they?
